John's original poems
<< February 2003 | poems index | clock poem | April 2003 >>CLOCK ON JOHNNY(go and look after those grandfather/longcase/tallcase clocks) (March 2003)It's a cold, lonely place, this morning, this world which greets me each day.
On awakening, I hear it call to me, it knows that I can't stay away.
Yet sometimes I despise it, and don't want to play its game,
And it laughs to antagonise me, then calls me just the same.
If God really loves me, then why must I live in an age of forgiveness, that will not forgive?
For if I was to run, to escape, to be free, they'd say,
"we understand" then persecute me.
"We must have convention and by it abide,
what a place this would be, if we all were to hide.
You're here to work lad, not to have fun,
learn how to walk, forget how to run.
dispense with these notions that you were born free,
abide by the rules or there's no room for thee."
Thus I do as I'm bid, though my mind aches and cries,
but I will not find pity in pitiless eyes.
Not for me the green fields and fresh cream cakes for tea,
Not for me idle dreams of what I'd like to be.
For when the dawn breaks, the first thing I see,
Is the light of the life that is waiting for me.
