Circa 1790. 13" brass arch dial with movement striking quarter hours on two bells.Rolling moon phases,subsiduary seconds dial and date aperture.Early four seasons spandrels in corners.Sublime fiddle back maple case profuseley inlaid with musical instruments kingwood and satinwood.Quadruple reeded pillars to hood with brass capitals and free standing reeded columns to sides of trunk again with brass capitals.There are inlays depicting Roman legions and also the head of a Caesar which I believe to be that of Nero as he fiddled while Rome burned.A vase is inlaid in the base with a latin inscription on it but I cannot make out what it says.In my opinion, this clock has been in a music room in a Stately Home,possibly on the east coast as this type of thing was prominenet in that area.Clock really has to be seen to be believed. SOLD !!CIRCA 1770 13" brass arch dial with rolling moon phases,subsiduary seconds dial and date aperture.Figured mahogany case with reeded quarter columns to sides of trunk and full reeded columns to hood.Blind fretwork at top of trunk. Height to bottom of detachable centre finial 7'9" 93" 236 cms. Height to top of finial 8'2" 98" 247 cms. From smoke free home. This fine,superior clock is by the most eminent of clockmakers John Wyke of Liverpool(1720-1787). Initially,at the age of 20 in 1740,John commenced his business in Prescot where he remained until 1759.He then moved to Wykes Court,Dale Street,Liverpool where he resided until his death in 1787.One of his clocks stands proudly in Liverpool Museum a glowing example that shows exactly what John was,the very best of clockmakers.It is not well known,but John numbered his moon phases clocks on the back of the moon disc.This clock is numbered 428.In addition to his clockmaking,John was probably the most important toolmaker of the 18th century in England(see Horological Shop Tools by Theodore R.Crom).I am given to understand that 15 years ago,his tool catalogue alone sold in auction for £10.000.00. John was known as being a kind hearted and generous man and he donated money regularly to the poorer people in Liverpool,especially poor schools close to his premises.On the day of his funeral,school children were given the day off school to walk behind his coffin. I feel privileged to own one of his clocks SOLD !!

Beautiful, rare and exquisite San Domingo figured mahogany case crossbanded in rosewood and containing satinwood string inlays and rounded quarter columns to sides of trunk.Width of trunk across centre 15".Painted coloured glass in arch of hood. Circa 1780.12" painted automatum arch dial,with subsiduary date dial,showing two moving black figures playing shuttlecock in arch.Arms and bats move back and forth with ticking of clock.Sweet mahogany case crossbanded in mahogany and inlaid with boxwood stringing.
